Last week was the start of my latest new experience in pregnancy after loss; the start of recurring health check appointments that will continue up until induction day. These appointments include a weekly to bi-weekly (every other week) checkup with my doctor to monitor baby’s heartbeat, a bi-weekly ultrasound to check baby’s overall development or any abnormalities, and a weekly NST (Non-Stress Test). The NST is a noninvasive test that monitors baby’s heart rate, along with their movements. I had my first NST this past Friday, which was both a comforting yet triggering experience all in one. The test was located on the same floor of the hospital where I was told that our first baby no longer had a heartbeat, and where I later gave birth. Though it triggered all sorts of uncomfortable emotions, I reminded myself of the comfort this appointment was supposed to give me with providing reassurance that all is well with baby number two. They brought me in and wrapped two bands around my belly with two monitors to record hear rate, movements, and contractions. I was also give a Jeopardy-like buzzer to click any time I felt baby move. The test lasted about 30 minutes and ended with the nurse confirming that all looked completely normal.

Even though these appointments may seem extensive, I am extremely appreciative that I am even able to have the option of getting these regular checks, and without cost (which I am sure is not an option in many countries). At a stage during this pregnancy where my anxiety is already high, these provide reassurance and allow me to be as cautious as I want, to at least alleviate some layers of stress. I recommend all women going through the same, or even outside of pregnancy, to always advocate for their own healthcare by being open with their practitioners; letting them know of any concerns they have, asking as many question as they have, and asking for any appointments/health checks that they believe are necessary.
